Jefferson County School Bus CrashDeath of Shan’l Autumn Newberry – Obituary
32-year-old Shan’l Autumn Newberry has died in a fatal Jefferson County Public Schools bus-car crash that occurred on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, in Louisville, KY. According to official reports, Newberry was driving a Kia going east on Ballardsville Road when at 6:45 a.m., she T-boned a school bus that was attempting to cross Ballardsville.
Renee Murphy, the JCPS spokeswoman, said Bus 0778 had 60 students on board going to Ballard High School and Kammerer Middle School.
The Norton Healthcare spokeswoman, Maggie Roetker, said 14 children were injured and have been treated at Norton Children’s Hospital downtown campus and the Norton Children’s Medical Center on Chamberlain Lane. They have been described as being in a good condition, with injuries ranging from bumps and bruises to broken bones.
16-year-old student David Valladares survived the accident with a bruised back and legs.
“All of sudden, I blacked out for maybe ten seconds or something and I’m way at the front of the bus,” Valladares said. “And, I don’t know how I got there. I don’t know if I slid or fell through the air. I don’t know what happened.”
