Richmond House Fire Death of Clara Humphrey and Ray Humphrey – Obituary

84-year-old Clara Humphrey and 84-year-old Ray Humphrey have died in a fatal Richmond, Virginia house fire that occurred in the 1400 block of Vinton Street. It happened on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at about 8 a.m. and killed the hearing-impaired couple on the scene.

According to official reports, the fire was caused by “improperly discarded smoking materials”, in the words of the Richmond Fire Department.

First responders arrived at the scene to find smoke blowing from the house. They broke down the door and located Clara and later Ray. They were brought outside and resuscitative procedures were attempted but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbor Malaika Greene said the couple was hearing impaired. She added she used to cut grass for them and often checked up on them. She was the first one on the scene when she saw smoke from the house. She knocked on the door but no one answered.
