Zapata Car Crash Death of Abelardo Dominguez Jr. – Obituary
Abelardo Dominguez Jr. has died following a fatal Zapata crash that killed Melanie Valenzuela on U.S. 83 on Friday, September 3, 2021. It happened when Melanie, while driving a Kia southbound on U.S. 83, crashed into a pick-up she was attempting to pass.
Melanie was killed at the scene while Abelardo was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to his injuries the following day at a San Antonio hospital.
The accident also left a third person injured. He was identified as Abelardo Dominguez III. His condition has not been made available.
The accident remains under investigation.
A second person has died in the head-on crash that killed a Zapata County Sheriff’s Office jailer, according to state police.
The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the second victim as Abelardo Dominguez Jr., 44, a resident of Zapata. He was the driver of the white pickup.
The case unfolded during the early morning of Sept. 3. A preliminary investigation revealed that a white Kia passenger car was traveling south on U.S. 83 when it attempted to pass the white pickup driven by Dominguez.
As a result, the Kia struck the pickup head-on. Authorities identified the driver of the Kia as Melanie Valenzuela, 19, a resident of Laredo. She was pronounced dead on scene. Valenzuela was a jailer at the Zapata County Jail en route to work.
The following day on Sept. 4, Dominguez died in a San Antonio hospital due to the injuries sustained in the crash. A third man, Abelardo Dominguez III, was taken to a local hospital and then flown out to a hospital in Corpus Christi.
DPS troopers are further investigating this fatal crash.
