Car Accident Death of Centennial High School student Liam Gillogly – Obituary

16-year-old Centennial High School student Liam Gillogly died on Saturday, September 25, 2021, in a Vegas car accident. Fellows students, family, and friends are mourning the teen who was hit by a Ford Fusion as he was crossing Centennial Center Boulevard at Tropical Parkway against a do-not-walk traffic signal. He was pronounced dead at University Medical Center.

Classmates say Gillogly was with his JROTC group, collecting money. Witnesses said it was an unsafe situation, with many kids running into traffic to collect money from cars.

Kim Crisp lives in the area and saw students going between vehicles.

“They’re excited somebody is going to give a donation,” said Crisp. “They go between three lanes and walk up and down the lanes to get the donation. It’s not worth it.”

Freshman student Andrew Pickup was with Gillogly when he was killed. Pickup said many students are grieving. He called Gillogly a brother figure and one of the first people he talked to when school started.

“He brightened up the room whenever he walked in,” said Pickup. “He was always really intelligent, always on task, and I feel like he was a great person.”

Centennial High School had counselors on campus Monday to help students with loss.

Centennial’s principal called Gillogly a superstar.

“He was an amazing leader and role model for our other Centennial Bulldogs,” Keith Wipperman said.

Crisp said she hopes the school changes guidelines for fundraisers that could put students in danger.

“Any single person who gave them money Saturday would probably give them a check or something,” said Crisp. “We don’t ever want this to happen again.”

8NewsNow reached out to the Clark County School District for more information on its safety guidelines for fundraisers but did not get a response by Monday evening.

Gillogly was the 102nd traffic-related fatality in LVMPD’s jurisdiction since the beginning of the year.
