Austin shooting death of Joel Camarillo – Obituary

19-year-old Joel Camarillo has died in a fatal Austin shooting that occurred in the 7200 block of South Congress Avenue on Monday, November 8, 2021. It happened at about 8:43 p.m.

According to official reports, a citizen called 911 to report gunshots heard, and added that a person may have been shot and that the victim was being driven away in a white sedan.

Officers arrived at the location to find the sedan leaving the apartment complex. The driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest while Joel, who was found in the vehicle with multiple bullet wounds, was taken to a local hospital.

Joel was later pronounced dead at about 9:23, less than an hour after the shooting was reported. Police also reported the shooting of two women who were left with non-life-threatening injuries. They added that the shooting that left Joel Camarillo dead and the one in which the women were injured are related.

Although no motive has been identified, residents of the apartment complex have said there is a lot of illicit drug activity in the area.

The shooting remains under investigation.
