Officials said that a worker for a South Carolina school system who was 64 years old died in a collision with a school bus in which the two vehicles collided head-on.

According to the state troopers who responded to the scene, the man’s SUV was driving through Marion County at the time of the collision with the bus, which had been moving in the other way.

According to a press release from the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Cpl. David Jones, the school bus then crashed into a ditch and a fence when the driver lost control.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the site of the accident on December 8th.

Edward McKenzie Alston, 64, was recognized as the deceased by the Marion County coroner’s office. He was a resident of Mullins, which is located around 45 miles to the northwest of Myrtle Beach.

The Marion County School District said in correspondence sent to McClatchy News that Alston passed away as a result of an event that involved a school bus operated by the district.

Since 2016, he has been employed by the municipality in the capacity of a food service operator.
