Law enforcement authorities in Lawrence have launched an inquiry following the tragic demise of a teenager who succumbed to a gunshot while driving on Thursday afternoon, resulting in a calamitous car collision with a fire hydrant.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., the Lawrence Police Department received an urgent call reporting a gunshot victim in distress at the 4900 block of Leone Drive.

Upon their prompt arrival at the scene, situated within a residential enclave adjacent to the crossroads of E. 49th Street and Shadeland Avenue, LPD officers discovered an injured male driver who had fallen prey to gunfire.

The grievously wounded driver, as per LPD reports, lost control of his vehicle, leading to a catastrophic impact with a fire hydrant.

The victim, officially identified by law enforcement as a 17-year-old male, was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility in a state of critical condition. Tragically, LPD issued a somber announcement shortly after 10 p.m. on Thursday evening, confirming the untimely passing of the victim.

The departed soul has been identified as Mekhi Reeves.
