In Newport News, the local law enforcement team finds itself grappling with an increasing number of harrowing homicide cases. Startlingly, the city has already exceeded the total count of homicides recorded for the entire previous year, as per the records of 13News Now.

The grim tally climbed even higher on Monday, as separate incidents unfolded, pushing the city’s homicide count to new heights.

Within a mere span of 12 hours in the Southeast community, two lives were tragically cut short due to gunfire, according to statements from the dedicated detectives working on these cases.

In the early hours, shortly past 1 a.m., the piercing sound of sirens shattered the stillness of the night as officers rushed to respond to an urgent call at The Towers high-rise apartments on Waterfront Circle.

Sararita Clark, a concerned resident of Newport News, shared her apprehension with 13News Now’s Kaicey Baylor, saying, “I looked out the window and was like, ‘Oh my goodness. What is going on?’ This is too much. I don’t feel safe anymore.”

The victim of this heart-wrenching incident has been identified as Ashford Carter, a 39-year-old resident of Newport News.

The swift response of law enforcement led to the apprehension of 30-year-old Quashawn Cooper, also from Newport News, in connection with the shooting on Waterfront Circle. Legal charges against Cooper are currently pending as the investigation unfolds.

Tragically, the day took another somber turn shortly before 12:30 p.m. when police investigators hurried to the scene on 22nd Street near Roanoke Avenue.

A concerned neighbor informed 13News Now that they had discovered the lifeless body of a man behind a vacant residence. As of now, the authorities have refrained from disclosing the name or age of the victim, but they have confirmed that the individual had fallen victim to a gunshot wound.
