Fatal Canton shooting death of Dontae Crayton – Obituary
In a tragic turn of events, an 18-year-old man is in Canton police custody following a shooting incident that claimed the life of 37-year-old Dontae Crayton.
According to Canton Police Lt. Dennis Garren, the harrowing incident transpired at approximately 10:31 p.m. within the vicinity of the 1900 block of Maple Avenue.
Responding swiftly to the distress call, law enforcement officers discovered Mr. Crayton within a residence, bearing a lone gunshot wound to his chest, a grievous injury that would ultimately prove fatal.
In a race against time, Canton Fire personnel rushed the injured victim, identified as Dontae Crayton, to the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where, despite valiant efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities apprehended the 18-year-old suspect, Savier Smiley, in close proximity to the scene. Smiley now faces grave charges of murder, marking a tragic chapter in Canton’s recent history.
