In a tragic turn of events on October 21, 2023, Samantha Woll, aged 40, who served as the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue, met a gruesome end, succumbing to multiple stab wounds outside her residence in the Lafayette Park neighborhood, situated to the east of downtown Detroit.

The somber discovery was made in the 1300 block of Joliet Place, as the police commenced their investigation upon encountering a lifeless body, revealing the gruesome aftermath of a violent crime. A trail of blood guided them to the victim’s abode, raising suspicions that the harrowing incident transpired there.

Expressing profound grief, U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat hailing from Holly, and Attorney General Dana Nessel, also a Democrat, mourned the untimely loss of Samantha Woll. Nessel conveyed, “I am shocked, saddened and horrified to learn of Sam’s brutal murder. Sam was as kind a person as I’ve ever known. She was driven by her sincere love of her community, state and country. Sam truly used her faith and activism to create a better place for everyone.”

Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit also extended his condolences and praised Samantha Woll as one of the city’s “great young leaders.” He revealed that he had met with her recently during the dedication of the newly refurbished synagogue, a project she had passionately overseen.

Samantha Woll had been at the helm of the synagogue since 2022 and actively participated in various local Jewish organizations. A statement released by the synagogue’s rabbi conveyed their shock and sorrow over her “unexpected death.”

The motive behind this heinous act remains elusive as the police continue their investigation. The grim incident unfolded when authorities received a distress call regarding an unresponsive woman lying on the ground around 6:30 a.m., and regrettably, they pronounced her deceased at the scene.
